The Red Vic’s Final Days

I just came home from a two-day mini-vacation, and what do I find? The Red Vic will definitely close on July 25—less than three weeks away. This seemed likely back in March, but it’s an absolute fact, now.

Among the final films are Babe, Stop Making Sense, Touch of Evil, and The Last Waltz. The theater will close with Harold and Maude.

Today, we can see almost any movie we want in the comfort of our own home. That’s wonderful. But it comes with a heavy price. Theaters that specialize in classics—the type of theater I created this blog to cover—are a dying breed. Nothing in your home can match the experience of sitting in the dark, starring at a large screen, surrounded by strangers with whom you are sharing an experience.

Everyone who cares about this experience should mourn the Red Vic’s passing.
