The Roxie is undergoing more organizational changes. The biggest change: They’ll be mixing more live theater with films. On weekends, you’ll get a half hour of live entertainment before the movie.
I don’t have time to really evaluate the announcement, so I’ll just do something horribly unprofessional. I’ll just pass on their press release, unedited:
The legendary ROXIE THEATER, in the Heart of the Mission, is thrilled to announce many new and exciting developments for San Francisco’s oldest-running movie house. The Roxie is a non-profit arts and theater organization dedicated to preserving and bringing new energy to San Francisco’s art scene.
Our inaugural Board of Directors currently consists of 13 members (a lucky number for us!), including curator, writer, and occasional preservationist Steve Seid, who has been at the Pacific Film Archive (PFA) for the past two decades and Susannah Robbins, the Executive Director of the San Francisco Film Commission.
The Roxie considers itself fortunate to have the support of our illustrious advisory board: John Waters, Deborah Kaufman, Janis Plotkin, Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman, andGraham Leggat.
Building on the roots of our famed film programming, The Roxie will soon be offering live theater. On April 14th Charles Phoenix will be performing his Retro Slide Show. David Templeton will be performing his one-man show “Wretch Like Me” May 6th, 7th, 8th, 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd. On July 5th, the Roxie welcomes back Porchlight with a night of stories about ”My Brushes with Fame.”
Beginning May 7th, The Roxie will be launching Roxie Stages. This project has been developed by Roxie Board member Kate Statton and will give the Roxie’s weekend patrons a one-of-a-kind experience, introducing a roster of entertainers who will grace the Roxie stage a half hour before the evening feature. The inspiration is to bring back dazzling, funky, and unforgettable performances, reviving the Roxie’s original function as a venue for Vaudeville-esque variety shows, a place where live entertainment and films are regularly presented in concert.
Roxie Stages is also part of the theater’s mission to become a center for San Francisco’s artistic community. The project will give local performers the opportunity to display their talent before a live audience. We have already begun reaching out to San Francisco schools and community centers to present the initiative to local entertainers. These specially selected individuals will have the opportunity to be a part of the thriving artistic community of the Mission District, joining the Roxie’s intention to become a viable space for a diverse body of artistic expression. Auditions will begin April 23.
May 13th, The Roxie Theater is excited to welcome back our famed Rep programmer and Marlon Riggs Award winner Elliot Lavine with his Noir series, “I Wake Up Dreaming: The Legendary and the Lost.”
This summer, the Roxie will be offering San Francisco’s children an educational series, "Coming To Your Senses," a fun exploration of how the human senses work though film, activities and scientific lectures.
The Roxie is a culturally rich creative center devoted to preserving the art of film and theater, encouraging independent thought and continuing to act as a hub of San Francisco’s world renowned community art scene. The Roxie hosts many of the city’s most popular film festivals, including Indiefest, Docfest and Frameline and Cinema By The Bay.
