I wish I could figure out a way to maintain this blog, see movies, raise a family, and earn a living. I’ve had to let the blog slip, recently. In fact, for the first time in years, I didn’t attend the press conference for the San Francisco International Film Festival. In case you haven’t heard, it runs April 23 through May 7.
I haven’t really had time to examine the announcements, so let me just put my two-cents in on this one topic:
The Founder’s Directing Award this year goes to Francis Coppola, a good choice, not only because he’s made some masterpieces, but also because he did so much for local filmmaking. The problem is that his talent burnt out so quickly. In the early to mid seventies, he made three masterpieces–The Godfather, The Conversation, and The Godfather, Part II. Then his talent disappeared as he was filming Apocalypse Now (you can actually watch it disappear). He hasn’t made anything really good, since.
