A few quick, disjointed comments on the San Francisco International Film Festival.
- While I saw quite a few good movies, even some excellent ones, I caught nothing as fantastic as the cream of last year’s crop: Adam’s Apples (now in theaters for at least one week and not to be missed) and In Bed (which has still not received a regular release in this country). Maybe I just saw the wrong pictures.
- I didn’t follow my own advise about skipping the movies earmarked for a regular release. I think I saw more films that will get such a release than ones that won’t. On the other hand, I could argue that as a reviewer, that’s a better use of my time. (And in my defense, Strange Culture got picked up for release after I screened a review copy.)
- They really have to do something about the slides presented before each film. There are only about 20 of them, and if you get to a theater early enough to get a good seat, you’re sick of them before the movie starts. And you get sicker with each screening you attend. If someone could put together a few hundred slides, each screening could have a different pre-show.
Tonight I’ve got a hot date with my wife to see Hot Fuzz at the Cerrito. I’ll tell you about it, probably on Sunday.
