Shortly after checking my watch and realizing that I had another hour of Spider-Man 3 to suffer through, the movie started getting interesting. Peter Parker had found his dark side, bringing back that perfect merging of fantasy and character development that made Spider-Man 2 the masterpiece of the genre. But that fascinating twist was soon buried by the multiple plotlines, boring villains, and forced motivations that make this threequel a chore to sit through. Even the CGI-bloated action sequences seem more intent on impressing you with sheer size than adding actual excitement. Spider-Man 2 proved that a big-budget, effects-laden, Hollywood fantasy could be a great work of art; Spider-Man 3 reminds us that they seldom are.
