The first and third Indiana Jones movies represent escapist action at its best, but the one made in between them is a real stinker. Leaving aside its Indian stereotypes of the “Thank goodness the British are here to civilize these savages” variety, it’s just no fun. Lucas and Spielberg apparently decided to make this a darker and therefore deeper excursion than was Raiders of the Lost Ark. But as Lucas and Spielberg don’t really have anything to say worth saying, the result is merely unpleasant.
